More than 10 million children were forced to flee their homes last year during the world’s 10 biggest crises, according to a new study by the NGO Save The Children.

The number of displaced children now stands at more than 50 million worldwide. This is the highest figure ever recorded, and has more than doubled since 2010.

In 2023, the NGO also found that an additional 29,000 children per day were displaced within their own country or forced to flee to another nation.

In Sudan and Somalia, children aged under 18 are most affected by displacement.

According to a spokesperson for the NGO Save The Children, a displaced child has most likely witnessed the kind of violence or destruction that no child should ever experience, before having to abandon everything they know.

When children lose their homes, they lose almost everything: their access to health care, education, food and safety. »

Displaced children generally suffered extreme violence, according to the NGO.

Children in danger in Gaza and the occupied West Bank

In the Gaza Strip, more than 5,350 children have died and nearly 12,300 have been injured since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. Thousands more are missing.

The Gaza Strip is today the most dangerous place in the world for a child, according to Unicef.

In the occupied West Bank At least 100 children were killed and hundreds more were forced to flee. 2023 will have been the deadliest year on record for children in the West Bank.

With these latest figures, Save the Children highlights the need to support children around the world.

They need vital supplies, but also safety, education, shelter, health, a place to play, laugh and learn – all things many of us take for granted.
