Israel has unleashed a new wave of attacks in the Gaza Strip as its war against the besieged enclave entered its second month.

In recent days, air raids have hit United Nations facilities where thousands of displaced people are sheltering, as well as hospitals, which are overwhelmed with wounded and short of electricity and supplies.

An Israeli attack destroyed several homes Tuesday morning in the southern town of Khan Younis.

“We were sleeping, babies, children, elderly people,” said one survivor, Ahmad al-Najjar, director general of the Ministry of Education in Gaza.

At a school in Khan Younis, thousands of displaced people lived in classrooms and a playground. One of them, Suhaila al-Najjar, said the past month had been filled with sleepless nights. “What will happen?” How are we going to live? The bakeries are closed, there is no more gas. What are we going to eat? she says.

In Deir el-Balah, rescuers pulled at least four dead and several injured children from the rubble of a razed building, witnesses said.

“My daughter,” a woman shouted as she ran behind them.
