Middle East: Protests after death of Hamas leader

Protests have erupted across the Middle East after the Hamas leader was announced dead. Israel has not publicly claimed responsibility for his killing. But Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel had dealt “severe blows” to its “enemies” in recent days.

Some of them carrying the green Hamas flag, thousands of people demonstrated this Wednesday in Ramallah, in the West Bank, a few hours after the announcement of the death of Ismail Haniyeh.

The head of Hamas’ political bureau was killed in Tehran in a strike attributed to Israel.

In the Iranian capital, where protests have also taken place, authorities are furious. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has said his country must avenge the death of Ismail Haniyeh.

Iran has declared three days of national mourning. After a funeral in Tehran on Thursday, the Hamas leader will be buried in Doha, Qatar, on Friday.

The news of his death sparked widespread reactions across the Middle East. In Tyre, in southern Lebanon, hundreds of Palestinian refugees marched through the streets of the city.

Protests also took place in Karachi, Pakistan, where authorities called the assassination of the Hamas leader a “irresponsible act”.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the assassination. But Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel had carried out “severe blows” has his “enemies” the last days.
