Several humanitarian ships rescued hundreds of migrants in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, most of the landings took place on the island of Lampedusa. 2,678 people are missing after trying to cross the sea to reach Europe.
In recent days in the Mediterranean Sea, rescue ships have rescued hundreds of migrants.
The first rescue was carried out on Christmas Eve by Sea-Watch, which rescued 118 migrants, including a dozen minors, the youngest aged three.
Last Tuesday, the Sea-Eye rescue vessel came to the aid of 106 people on board two different boats not far from Malta.
The OCEAN Viking also rescued 244 people on Wednesday. The ship was authorized by the Italian authorities to disembark in the port of Bari.
Most of the landings took place on the island of Lampedusa, located 130 km from the Tunisian coast. According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, more than 1,500 migrants arrived in the country in the space of 4 days.
According to the International Organization for Migration, since January 2023, 2,678 people have gone missing after trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), 260,662 people have crossed the Mediterranean Sea and reached Europe from North Africa since the start of 2023.
