After signing a security treaty with Ukraine, the British Prime Minister reassured Ukrainian MPs that UK aid will continue until Kyiv joins NATO.
After the signing of a security treaty between the United Kingdom and Ukraine on Friday, which is accompanied by a major aid package worth 2.9 billion euros, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak addressed Ukrainian deputies in the Rada.
“It’s not just about how NATO benefits Ukraine, it’s also about how Ukraine benefits NATO”said Rishi Sunak. “Your understanding of modern warfare comes not from a textbook, but from the battlefield. Your armed forces are experienced, innovative and courageous. Ukraine has its place in NATO, and NATO will be stronger with Ukraine.”
The document signed Friday in Kyiv comes at a time when doubt is growing in the United States, particularly regarding the continuation of aid provided to Ukraine a few months before the American presidential election.
Despite the blocking of new funds by Republican representatives in Congress, the United States could nevertheless follow the path taken by the United Kingdom and sign a security engagement treaty with Ukraine. According to US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, speaking to Ukrainian media, signing such a treaty is exactly the goal set by Joe Biden.
In the meantime, Rishi Sunak has promised that his country’s commitment will continue until Ukraine joins NATO.
Note that for his first international trip since his recent appointment, the new French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Séjourné is expected this weekend in Kyiv.
