An apartment in the seaside resort of Palanga, Lithuania, caught fire on Wednesday evening.

The investigation established that the fire was probably caused by an electric scooter being charged.

According to the officers, there were residents in the apartment at the time of the explosion, but there were no casualties. However, the fire caused significant damage.

“It was a shock. My nephew was at home with his girlfriend when it happened. She ran out and started screaming about the fire. She managed to grab her cat and heard an explosion. The scooter battery is quite big. It heats up, expands and explodes.”reports a witness to the scene.

Electrical wiring or improper use of devices is one of the most common causes of fires, quite common with electric scooters. Following the fire, authorities have warned users to take precautions to charge their electrical devices.

“We are seeing incidents due to incorrect charging, either due to the use of the wrong chargers or due to incorrect charging of the lithium battery”says Aurelija Maslauskiene, local representative of the city’s fire department.
