The Irish Prime Minister convinced that the EU will find a way, with or without Hungary, to validate its 50 billion euro aid plan for Ukraine.
The Irish Prime Minister is optimistic about Ukraine.
Leo Varadkar is convinced that with or without Hungary’s agreement, the European Union will find a way to validate its 50 billion euro aid plan to support the Ukrainian war effort.
In principle, the financing must be approved unanimously, Budapest is opposed to it, but Leo Varadkar mentions a plan B.
Leo Varadkar, Irish Prime Minister: “The European Council will meet on February 1. I think it will be possible to approve this package of 50 billion euros of grants and loans for Ukraine. If it does not is not possible to do it as the European Union, I think we will have to do it as governments. I hope it does not come to that. I would much prefer that we do it unanimously. But we have to have a plan B and a fallback option. And for me, it would be the governments that are ready and able to continue supporting Ukraine, and therefore the vast majority of governments in Europe, that would do so on a multilateral basis.”
Viktor Orban refuses to give the green light to the financing of aid to Ukraine while, for its part, the European Commission is maintaining for the moment the freezing of 20 billion euros of European funds intended for Hungary.
