Latvia is introducing a civil solidarity pact for homosexual couples who can now legalise their union and benefit from certain tax advantages.
Maksim Ringo and Janis Locs are the first Latvian same-sex couple to have their union legalised.
The new law came into force on Monday. The new legislation creates a civil union and establishes legal recognition for same-sex couples.
Janis Locs, Latvian civil partner: “We have been waiting for this day for a long time, since the day the law was passed. It is a highly anticipated event.”
The Latvian Parliament approved the creation of a civil solidarity pact last November.
46 same-sex couples had launched legal proceedings to obtain official recognition as full families.
Homosexual couples can register with a notary, marriage at the town hall remains reserved for heterosexual couples.
Aigars Kaupe, notary: “This is not only important from a historical point of view. It is a fundamental element for Latvian society.the right to recognize that people are different, that relationships are different, that everyone has value and that everyone needs to be protected.”
Latvia’s new law offers same-sex couples in civil partnerships tax benefits, but not as many rights as traditional couples. The law does not allow same-sex couples to adopt or inherit from their spouse.
