Last official procession of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark made her last official journey in the traditional golden carriage, before her abdication scheduled for January 14. Amalienborg’s procession to Christiansborg Castle marks his final ceremonial appearance as reigning monarch, following his surprise abdication announcement on New Year’s Eve.

The Queen’s eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, is expected to ascend the throne as king. He and Crown Princess Mary joined the Queen at Christiansborg Castle for the New Year’s raising ceremony.

The Golden Carriage is the finest carriage in the Royal Household and is used during the traditional New Year’s celebration. It is covered in 24-karat gold leaf, has four golden crowns on the roof and painted coats of arms on the doors .
