The latest talks are underway at COP28 in Dubai to try to reach an agreement.

The latest project on the table sets no common objective for “exiting” from fossil fuels and leaves countries free to choose how to “reduce” their consumption.

Europeans and environmental defenders would like a more restrictive text.

Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President: “We have made progress, but we still have a lot to do. You know what remains to be agreed and you know that I want you to achieve the highest ambition on all points, including the language on fossil fuels.”

Jane Witherspoon: “Nations will now provide the UAE with their thoughts, amid calls for more multilateralism and collaboration. As the two-week summit draws to a close, so do peripheral events that have took place in the many pavilions at the Expo City Dubai site. Congratulations were given to Azerbaijan for being chosen to host COP29 next year. Now all eyes will be on the host city of the next year and on maintaining momentum in the global fight against climate change.
