World marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum died last night in a car accident, at the age of 24.
His trainer, Gervais Hakizimana, who was present in the vehicle driven by the athlete, also died. Kelvin Kiptum was due to participate in the Paris Olympic Games in a few months.
During the Chicago marathon in October 2023, the young Kenyan athlete performed the best world performance in history, going under the two hours and one minute mark.
Kenyan President William Ruto praised the memory of the man he described as an “extraordinary sportsman”.
