The United States has approved retaliatory measures against Iranian-backed militants in Iraq and Syria. Sanctions against Israeli settlers were also adopted.
US President Joe Biden has approved retaliatory measures against Iran-backed militants in Iraq and Syria, following a series of attacks on US bases and installations in the Middle East.
The latest one, which occurred last Sunday in Jordan, cost the lives of three American soldiers. Washington blames the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a militia group backed by Iran.
“We will continue to work to avoid broader conflict in the region, but we will take whatever action is necessary to defend the United States, our interests, and our people. We will respond when, where, and how in the ways we choose.” said Lloyd Austin, US Secretary of Defense.
While continuing to support Israel in its war against Hamas, Washington announced Thursday sanctions against four Israeli settlers, accused of having attacked Palestinians. These sanctions will freeze individuals’ assets in the United States.
At the same time, in Gaza, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. The UNRWA Agency has announced that it will have to end its operations at the end of the month since Israel accuses twelve of its members of having participated in the October 7 attacks. Several donor countries have suspended their funding to the UN agency.
Some Israeli citizens are demanding a complete halt to humanitarian aid, and have held several protests near Israel’s main commercial port.
