The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post said today that Germany and Hungary granted citizenship to Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip, to facilitate their release through prisoner exchange negotiations with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
The newspaper stated that dual citizenship plays a role through the possibility of intervention by foreign countries seeking to protect their citizens, noting its knowledge – through sources – of the release of some “hostages” who obtained German and Hungarian passports (it did not mention their number), in exchange for Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners in its prisons in The temporary truce lasted for 7 days and ended in early December.
She added that there are still detainees in Gaza who obtained passports from those two countries, and that it is not clear when they were provided with German and Hungarian passports, noting that the Israelis who obtained the passports “have family members born in Central European countries.”
The newspaper also quoted an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying, “We will not comment on this.” The German Foreign Ministry declined to comment, while the Hungarian Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to an inquiry from the newspaper.
In late October, media reported that American organizations urged Germany, Austria, and the United States to issue passports to Israeli hostages, according to what the Jerusalem Post reported, which confirmed that Hamas was detaining prisoners of nationalities on November 8 last year. At least 28 countries.
