Japan: death sentence for 2019 arsonist


36 people died in the flames which ravaged an animation studio in Kyoto in 2019: a Japanese court sentences the arsonist to the death penalty.

In 2019, Shinji Aoba burned down an animation studio in Kyoto.

36 people died in the flames and Shinji Aoba himself was seriously burned.

Shinji Aoba was convinced that the studio had stolen a script idea from him.

The animation studio strongly denied his accusations, Shinji Aoba expressed remorse and the court ruled that the arsonist’s discernment was not impaired at the time he committed his crime.
