Italy outraged by images of national chained during her trial in Hungary


The images of an Italian national who appeared in chains during her trial in Hungary provoked indignation in Italy, right up to the top of the State. Rome summons the Hungarian ambassador.

Ilaria Salis, 39, teacher and anti-fascist activist, has been detained in Hungary for almost a year in a high security prison, this Monday, the Italian national appeared handcuffed and chained, held by a police officer, during her trial in Budapest.

Images of the young woman restrained of channels outraged Italy right up to the top of the government.

The young woman is accused of having attacked neo-Nazis, who were in February 2023 in Budapest, to celebrate “Honor Day”, **a demonstration to glorify a Nazi battalion”.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Italian foreign minister declared that LThe treatment of Ilaria Salis was contrary to European Union standards and summoned the Hungarian ambassador to Italy.

The national has been detained for more than a year in a prison in high security in the Hungarian capital.

His father, Roberto Salis, denounced these conditions of detention:

These conditions would be considered torture in Italy. You can’t treat a prisoner like that. (…) We cannot understand that there could be such a disparity in terms of law between the countries which are part of the European community.”

The young Italian woman accused of having participated in an attack against two neo-Nazis risks more 11 years in prison. Ilaria Salis refutes his convictions.

She declared herself not guilty and trial has been adjourned until next May.
