Immigration at the heart of the debate among Europeans in Italy where in Monfalcone, in the north-east of the country, a third of the population comes from abroad.

In the northeast of Italy, a third of the population of Monfalcone comes from abroad.

Most of them are Bangladeshi Muslims who work in the shipyards.

Mayor Monfalcone’s name is Anne Cisint, she denounces teaching in Arabic in community centers, the wearing of the veil by schoolgirls and believes that Muslims are now “too numerous”.

Many of the Bangladeshis from Monfalcone were recruited at the end of the 1990s and then benefited from family reunification measures.

In Monfalcone today, two out of three newborns are children of immigrants.

The mayor of Monfalcone believes that Muslims are now “too numerous”.

The elected official has received death threats and benefits from police protection.
