The UN Interposition Force in southern Lebanon has once again been targeted.

Four Italian soldiers were injured when two rockets hit the mission base in Shama. Antonio Tajani, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, immediately reacted and declared that the strikes were “unacceptable”.

He condemned the attack after the UNIFIL base was hit by rockets believed to have been fired by the militant group Hezbollah or its affiliates.

The minister advised groups like Hezbollah not to play with weapons they do not know how to use.

UNIFIL is the United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon and has operated in the country since 1978. This force consists of more than 10,000 peacekeepers from 48 countries. Lebanon-based Hezbollah began firing on Israel the day after the Gaza war began, with the two sides exchanging cross-border fire almost daily. This has resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border. Israel launched a ground offensive in Lebanon in October, with up to 15,000 Israeli troops present in the country.
