Italian opposition takes to the streets to denounce Meloni’s reforms

Thousands of Italians demonstrated in Rome to denounce the reforms brought by Giorgia Meloni to Parliament. One on the autonomy of certain regions and the other on the direct election of the Prime Minister.

Giorgia Meloni called her “mother of all reforms“. Her government proposed constitutional changes to allow the direct election of the Italian Prime Minister, with the aim of ensuring, according to her, the stability of the government, strengthening the role of the Prime Minister and allowing Italians choose those who run the country.

On Tuesday, the Senate voted in favor of the reform which the opposition sees as a way for the Prime Minister to subjugate parliamentarians.

The reform concerning the election of the Italian Prime Minister is unacceptable, it undermines the Italian Constitution. I am against it and I support the left-wing parties which oppose it in Parliament”, explains a demonstrator.

At the same time, Parliament began debating a bill that would grant greater autonomy to Italy’s regions, one of the main proposals of Matteo Salvini’s League party. In a rare show of unity, opposition parties, primarily the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement, joined forces to protest the plan.

I appeal to all opposition forces. Enough divisions!” exclaimed Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic PD party.

The reform that would grant greater autonomy to Italian regions is worrying because it creates new inequalities that add to those we already know in the country, especially among the younger generations“, explains a demonstrator.
