Israeli writer: It is time to treat the Palestinian Authority as an enemy policy

An article in the Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post reported that the attack launched by the Palestinian resistance near the Kedumim settlement, east of Qalqilya in the northern West Bank, last Monday, increased Israeli demands for a more comprehensive response to “terrorism in the West Bank.”

Last Monday morning, three Palestinian resistance fighters – including two who the Israeli Internal Security Service (Shin Bet) said were known to it – attacked a bus and vehicles carrying Israelis at the entrance to the village of Al-Funduq and in two separate locations on the main road connecting the cities of Nablus and Qalqilya.

This operation, which was carried out near the Kedumim settlement, resulted in the killing of 3 Israelis and the wounding of 7 others, including serious injuries.

Demands for escalation

The author of the article, Pesach Woleki, pointed out that Defense Minister Israel Katz hinted – in a statement from the site of the attack – about a shift in the approach sought by the leaders of the Jewish communities there.

The minister said that he instructed the army to “reinforce our forces in Judea and Samaria,” in reference to the West Bank, adding, “We will act with all force against the terrorists, those who sent them, and those who protect them.”

The writer considered that the minister’s words were certainly welcomed by those who were calling on the leadership to escalate against “terrorism” more seriously. He wondered who Katz meant at the end of his statement, especially in light of the recent internal developments in the areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

He pointed out that the Palestinian Authority has been active in recent weeks fighting fighters from the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements, in a relentless effort to regain control over many areas in the West Bank.

Why now?

The writer asked again: Why is the Palestinian Authority now trying to regain control over the areas controlled by Hamas and Islamic Jihad?

But he answers other questions, saying, “Do we understand that the Palestinian Authority, which continues to encourage terrorist killers and reward them financially, will now be a direct target of the Israeli army? Or will Israel continue to officially pretend that the Palestinian Authority is not an enemy of Israel like Hamas?”

He says that one of the answers lies with US President-elect Donald Trump, who during his first term cut off all US aid to the Palestinian Authority as long as it continued the program of “rewarding terrorists with generous pensions for killing Israelis,” as the writer claims.

The Palestinian Authority rejected

The author of the article claimed that the Palestinian Authority is trying to appear as “the good guys fighting terrorists” as Trump’s return to the White House approaches.

However, the author also claims that while the Palestinian Authority is fighting Hamas and Islamic Jihad, members of the Authority are participating in attacks on Israelis. He gave an example of what happened last weekend in the town of Maithalun, located between the cities of Nablus and Jenin.

The article in the Jerusalem Post concluded that there is now, after three decades of Palestinian Authority rule, clear hostility towards Israel.

He said that if the Israeli leadership has truly learned the lesson of October 7, then dealing with the Palestinian Authority – as a “terrorist enemy” along with a complete rejection of any kind of two-state solution – is the only acceptable way forward.
