Israeli strike in Lebanon: Hamas denounces the “assassination” of Saleh al-Arouri who was killed in an Israeli strike this Tuesday in Beirut.
Hamas quickly confirmed the information first broadcast by the Hezbollah television channel: Saleh al-Arouri, senior Hamas official and number 2 in the organization, was killed this Tuesday evening in an explosion.
Arouri, one of the founders of Hamas’ military wing, had led the group’s presence in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened to kill him even before the start of the war between Hamas and Israel on October 7.
Israeli officials declined to comment on the event.
Lebanon’s national news agency said the explosion killed six people and was carried out by an Israeli drone.
An explosion rocked the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital on Tuesday evening, causing chaos in the stronghold of the militant group Hezbollah.
The explosion occurred during more than two months of heavy firefights between Israeli troops and Hezbollah members along Lebanon’s southern border.
Since fighting began on October 8, fighting has been concentrated within a few kilometers of the border, but on several occasions the Israeli Air Force has struck Hezbollah targets deeper in Lebanon.
Earlier in the day, Hezbollah said its fighters had carried out several attacks along the Lebanese-Israeli border, targeting Israeli military posts.
