The Israeli army confirmed on Saturday that it had struck several Houthi targets in western Yemen after a deadly drone attack on its territory on Friday. An operation claimed by the pro-Iran rebel group.
A number of “military targets” were hit in the western port city of Hodeidah, a Houthi stronghold, the Israeli military said, adding that its attack was “a response to the hundreds of attacks carried out against the State of Israel in recent months.”
Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam wrote on the social media platform X that Yemen had been subjected to a “blatant Israeli aggression” targeting the province’s fuel storage facilities and power plant. He said the attacks aim “to increase the suffering of the people and pressure Yemen to stop supporting Gaza.”
Mohammed Abdulsalam also clarified that these attacks would only make the people of Yemen and its armed forces more determined to support the Palestinian cause.
The Israeli strikes reportedly left several people dead and injured, but Yemeni health officials have not given further details.
Friday, A Houthi drone attack killed one person in central Tel Aviv and wounded at least 10 others near the U.S. Embassy on Friday morning.
Since January, Yemeni rebels have stepped up attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, and US and British forces have responded each time with air raids on targets in Yemen, so far with little effect.
