An Israeli airstrike on a UN-run school housing displaced Palestinians in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza has killed at least 40 people, mainly women and children, according to local government officials.
Thursday’s raid came after the army announced a new ground and air attack on several refugee camps in central Gaza.
The Palestinian Wafa news agency said thousands of displaced Palestinians had taken refuge at the al-Sardi school, linked to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), when it was attacked.
The Palestinian group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, condemned the pre-dawn attack, calling it a “horrible massacre.”
