An Israeli airstrike on a school housing thousands of displaced Palestinians in northern Gaza has killed at least 15 people.
The Israeli army confirmed it struck the school in Jabalia refugee camp, saying it was targeting Hamas fighters.
Thursday’s bombings brought to 36 the number of people killed in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
Footage from the Hafsa al-Faluja school showed rescue workers evacuating the injured from the compound amid scattered debris and crowds of people. One video showed men wrapping a mutilated and severed torso in plastic sheeting and putting body parts in a cooler.
Israeli forces have repeatedly struck schools, alleging that Hamas uses them as “command centers” to plan attacks. The Palestinian group has denied the accusations.
Many school buildings have been converted to house displaced families in this besieged enclave where the majority of its 2.3 million residents have been repeatedly uprooted by war.
In the southern town of Khan Younis, authorities buried in a mass grave the bodies of 88 Palestinians whom Israel returned to Gaza.
The Health Ministry denounced what it called “inhumane and immoral” Israel’s handling of the bodies, saying they were sent back crammed into a truck without any identifying information.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 41,534 Palestinians and injured 96,092, according to the latest figures released Thursday by the Health Ministry. More than half of the dead are women and children, including around 1,300 babies and young children under the age of two.
