Israel murdered the Tel Aviv Tribune Anas Al-Sharif correspondent and four other employees in a targeted attack on a tent in Gaza City, taking the total number of journalists killed since October 7, 2023 at 269.
The correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, Cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Moamin Aliwa, and their assistant Mohammed Noufal met in a media tent outside the Al-Shifa hospital when they were targeted by a drone.
Two others were killed in the Sunday evening attack which sparked the conviction.
Tel Aviv Tribune Media Network condemned what he called a “targeted assassination” and called him “yet another flagrant and premeditated attack against press freedom”.
“This attack comes in the midst of the catastrophic consequences of the Israeli assault underway against Gaza, which saw the incessant slaughter of civilians, forced famine and the erasure of entire communities,” the network said in a statement.
“The order to assassinate Anas Al Sharif, one of the bravest journalists in Gaza, and his colleagues, is a desperate attempt to silence the votes exposing the imminent seizure and occupation of Gaza.”
The committee to protect journalists (CPJ) says that it is “dismayed” by the murder of Israel of journalists from Tel Aviv Tribune.
“Israel’s model to label journalists and activists without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intention and respect for press freedom,” said CPJ regional director Sara Qudah.
“Journalists are civilians and should never be targeted. The managers of these murders must be held responsible,” added Qudah.
Last month, the CPJ said it was seriously concerned about the security of Al-Sharif because it was “targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign”.
Since Israel launched his war against the enclave in October 2023, he regularly accused Palestinian journalists in Gaza of being members of Hamas, in the context of what rights defense groups say they are an effort to discredit their report on Israeli abuses.
