Iran: the country signs a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union

As Western economic sanctions against Russia and Iran increase, this Monday, December 25, during the supreme economic council of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which was held in Saint Petersburg, chaired by Vladimir Putin, Iran signed a free trade agreement.

The Economic Union includes five countries that were part of the former Soviet Union including Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.

For the Russian president this agreement is very important because Russia wishes to strengthen its ties with Tehran.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also attended the meeting, the two countries are linked by a bilateral agreement.

Mr. Putin praised the economic development of Russia and other EAEC member states, saying there had been significant GDP growth.

A free trade agreement between EAEU countries and Iran has been signed, and a similar draft agreement with Egypt “is at a very advanced stage.”
