On this Friday March 8, International Women’s Rights Day, demonstrations are being organized in several cities across the planet. This is particularly the case in South Korea. In Seoul, there were thousands, gathered to raise awareness on the importance of gender issues, in the run-up to the legislative elections.

In about a month, legislative elections will be held in South Korea. We are here so that the issue of gender inequality and many other women-related issues can be debated during the election period” said Oh Kyung Jin, general secretary of Korean Women’s Associations United.

This day highlights the inequalities faced by women. This is what Antonio Guterres recalled, in a video filmed for the occasion.

Billions of women and girls face marginalization, injustice and discrimination, while the persistent epidemic of violence against women disgraces humanity. Our world still reflects millennia of male-dominated power relations“, declared the UN Secretary-General.

In Russia, this day is marked by traditional values. In a speech, Vladimir Putin particularly emphasized the reproductive role of women.

You, dear women, can transform the world through your beauty, your wisdom and your spiritual generosity, but above all thanks to the greatest gift that nature has given you: the birth of children.“, said the Russian president.

In the Philippines, March 8 was marked by clashes in the capital between the police and demonstrators who came to denounce harassment and sexual violence.
