The international press has highlighted the complexities of the Israeli situation, from tensions with Jordan to internal criticism of the government’s performance, as well as the diplomatic challenges and chances of reaching a ceasefire deal.
The Wall Street Journal covered the incident of the killing of three Israeli security personnel in a shooting at the Allenby crossing on the border with Jordan, describing the attack as a rare occurrence, pointing to the escalation of tensions between the two countries due to the war in Gaza.
The Jordanian government strongly criticized Israel’s handling of the war, calling for an arms embargo on it, the newspaper added. The newspaper also referred to demonstrations in Jordan demanding the cancellation of the peace treaty and economic partnerships with Israel.
In an analysis of the internal Israeli situation, a writer in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper saw that Israel is heading towards the unknown without a clear strategy, and described Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a weak person who does not know how to make decisions, stressing that this situation is unacceptable, especially in critical times.
In the diplomatic context, Haaretz newspaper reported that the administration of US President Joe Biden is close to putting the final touches on a proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, aimed at bridging the gaps between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
Pessimism about the deal
However, officials are pessimistic about its chances of success, and a date for its announcement has not yet been set. The newspaper quoted a foreign diplomat involved in drafting the proposal as saying: “We are not making any progress,” reflecting the difficulty of approaching a solution or deal.
In an article in The Guardian, an article pointed out that the limited British move to ban arms licenses will not be enough to curb Israel’s broader regional policies and control over the Palestinian territories.
The article added that critics of the left-wing camp may have been right to say that this measure would not be enough to stop the broader escalation in the West Bank and Gaza, and the article emphasizes the limited impact of international measures on Israeli policies.
The French newspaper “Liberation” concluded with a report about the cancellation of the Israeli cinema salon in France under pressure from pro-Palestinian groups.
The newspaper added that several pro-Palestinian groups had called for the cancellation of this festival, which was scheduled to be held in June and was postponed to September due to tensions related to the war in the Gaza Strip. This event reflects the extended impact of the conflict on Israel’s cultural and diplomatic relations in Europe.
