International newspapers focused on persecuting Israel in international judicial forums because of its unprecedented war on the Gaza Strip, the repercussions of European countries’ recognition of the State of Palestine, and how Tel Aviv will deal with its consequences.
In this context, international human rights law specialist Litz Oyt commented on Israel’s call on countries of the civilized world to boycott a decision that might be issued by the International Criminal Court to arrest its leaders, saying that it reflects a colonial mentality.
According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, Awit points out that a country like the United States’ talk about the Israeli judicial system’s ability to deal with international crimes is not commensurate with its long history of impunity, which any impartial observer can notice.
The Hebrew newspaper “Haaretz” quoted experts in international law that the laxity of the law enforcement apparatus in Israel contributed to the crisis before the international courts, and that the statements of Israeli figures were the basis for the decisions of the international courts.
The newspaper adds that the law enforcement system in Israel failed due to the failure to open investigations with officials who incited the targeting of civilians, while one of them says, “In Israel they do not investigate or prosecute, but rather legitimize military methods to destroy civilian areas and starve the population to achieve the goals of the war.”
Increasing Israeli isolation
In turn, the American newspaper “The New York Times” said that prolonging the war and refraining from developing a plan to govern Gaza after it would cost Israel a heavy price, including increasing international pressure and isolation.
She indicated – while commenting on European countries’ recognition of the Palestinian state – that the most prominent question centers on whether these moves will bring about a change in the Israeli position that insists on achieving complete victory over the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)?
For its part, the Hebrew newspaper “The Times of Israel” said that Israel needs to make difficult decisions regarding the management of the Gaza Strip after the war, pointing out that it has few good options.
The newspaper saw that the Hamas movement is regrouping its ranks after months of bloody fighting and regaining its ability to attack Israel, and that “the gains achieved at the beginning of the military operation thanks to the aerial bombardment have turned into a grinding conflict against an adaptable insurgency.”
As for the British magazine “The Economist”, it touched on the process of counting martyrs in the Gaza war, and stated that it is more complicated now, given that many hospitals are out of service.
The magazine pointed to many reports from international bodies that testified to the Ministry of Health in Gaza that the numbers it usually announces are accurate, and stated that an analysis of the list of victims specified by their names up to last April 30 suggests that it largely matches reality.
