International newspapers: Israel may be subject to a Western arms embargo | policy

International newspapers and websites discussed the repercussions of the International Criminal Court issuing two arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, and some suggested that Israel might be subject to a Western arms embargo.

Le Monde newspaper said in its editorial that the Israeli reactions strongly opposing the International Criminal Court’s decision reflect the extent to which Israel is accustomed to impunity. The newspaper stated that the court’s decision indicates the urgent need for accountability.

The editorial added, “Despite the blackout and Israel’s attempts to cover up what is happening inside Gaza by preventing the entry of foreign journalists, all scenes from Gaza were supportive of the court’s decision.”

The Wall Street Journal wrote that the issuance of two arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant paves the way for the trial of other officials involved in the war on the Gaza Strip.

According to the newspaper, analysts expect that many governments will reduce their contacts with Israeli officials after the decision, which may reinforce the boycott of academics and commercial companies, and it quoted a former Israeli diplomat as saying, “The matter is different this time, as it is not related to a protest at a university or riots in Amsterdam, but rather to a court decision.” International criminal law.

Amos Harel pointed out in the newspaper “Haaretz” that there are fears that the ICC’s decision “will open the way for a Western arms embargo on Israel, with the possibility of holding many Israeli army soldiers and commanders accountable in many countries.”

Writer Ishaan Tharoor in the Washington Post said that the ICC’s decision was supported by many of Israel’s allies, “and Netanyahu, even if he is welcomed in Washington, will have to seriously consider the possibility of his plane making an emergency stop in one of the countries committed to the court’s decision.”

The writer quotes a researcher as saying, “The United States should demand more investigations from Israel instead of directing its anger at the court, as this harms its credibility.”
