In their coverage of the developments of the war on Gaza, international newspapers and websites focused on the Israeli strategy in the West Bank, and the impact of the scenes of prisoners broadcast by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on the Israeli interior, in addition to pressure from activists to ban American arms sales to Israel.
A report in Le Monde highlighted what it considered to be the emergence of signs of the war in Gaza extending to the West Bank, noting that the military operations in the West Bank are the longest since the Second Intifada and that their scope is expanding.
The French newspaper reported that the Israeli army is using military techniques similar to those it uses in Gaza, such as relying on air strikes, evacuating residential areas, and targeting infrastructure.
In another topic, the New York Times wrote that the videos published by Hamas about the detainees in Gaza are deepening divisions within Israel and increasing pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to reach a ceasefire agreement.
The American newspaper highlights the comment of the father of one of the six prisoners on scenes of them before their killing, where he said, “It is a wake-up call for the world to move as quickly as possible.”
The Guardian newspaper focused on what it said was pressure exerted by American activists on Congress to ban arms sales to Israel.
Activists say Britain’s move in this direction strengthens Congress’s hand by following the example of a US ally that has found there is a clear risk that its military equipment could be used to commit serious violations of international law.
Possibility of the return of Jewish migration
On another subject, Haaretz wrote, based on numerous interviews, about the possibility of a return to the era of Jewish migration after the October 7 attack, noting that tens of thousands of Israelis have left abroad for fear of war, the decline of democracy, or the high cost of living.
The Israeli newspaper spoke about the flight of many Jews from the diaspora to Israel due to what it called anti-Semitism or simply out of solidarity with Israel.
On the other hand, an article on the Al-Monitor website asked whether the United States is able to reconcile Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah in the absence of a ceasefire in Gaza?
The website quotes a diplomat as saying that the possibility of a multi-front war still exists and its impact will be disastrous for Democratic candidate for the US elections, Kamala Harris, if President Joe Biden’s administration does not intensify its efforts to contain the situation soon.
