The international press continues to highlight the repercussions of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, and the possibility of it turning into a regional war in light of strikes believed to be Israeli and American that occurred in the region in recent days.
In this context, the British newspaper “Financial Times” discussed the temporal context of the American strike that targeted a leader in the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, and said that it comes in light of the ongoing war between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), which increases the risk of a broader regional conflict.
The strike also comes – according to the newspaper – two days after the prominent Hamas leader, Saleh Al-Arouri, was targeted in Lebanon.
As for the French newspaper Le Monde, it talked about a difficult equation facing the Lebanese Hezbollah after the assassination of Al-Arouri. He cannot help but respond to what he considers a provocation by Israel in his stronghold.
The newspaper adds, “On the other hand, any strong response risks dragging Hezbollah into a comprehensive war with Israel, which it has been avoiding since October 8.”
In turn, Foreign Policy magazine published an article summarizing several lessons that Israel must learn from the Hamas attack, noting that the attack proved that the policy of deterrence is useless.
The article explained that it is not possible to rely solely on intelligence services for early warning, nor on high-tech defenses, pointing out that the greatest danger to Israel, according to the article, is “internal,” and that killing more Palestinians undermines its reputation throughout the world.
For its part, the American newspaper “The New York Times” mentioned in a report that Israeli society was shocked by the army institution, which it holds in high esteem as being based on a set of humanitarian principles that it constantly promotes.
The report recalls the incident of the killing of three prisoners in Gaza by Israeli army fire, then says that doubts are growing among Israelis regarding the rules of engagement imposed by the army, while the conviction of human rights groups is strengthening that the army’s failures in this aspect are concentrated in most cases in its dealings with the Palestinians.
The Israeli newspaper “Haaretz”, in an article, advised the Israelis “to support stopping the war if they are looking for their own interests, if not for the sake of Gaza and its residents.”
The article reviews many of the repercussions of the war on the daily lives of Israelis since the beginning of the war, including the disruption of schooling, increased economic burdens, a decline in investment, a high crime rate, and incidents of weapons use within society at an alarming rate.
