In Venice, the restoration work on Saint Mark’s Basilica is entering a new phase.

Victims of repeated floods, the ancestral marbles and stones of the building are literally eaten away by the sea salt left by the tides.

It is also necessary to repair the damage caused by previous renovations which sometimes accelerated the deterioration observed today.

To limit the risk of flooding, a temporary glass barrier also protects the basilica from low floods.

The restoration work is expected to last at least two years.
