The new government of Donald Tusk has created four new ministries. They must address urgent societal issues and bring Poland closer to the European Union.
The new government of Donald Tusk has created four new ministries with the aim of bringing Poland closer to European values and standards. One of them is the Ministry of Industry, located in the mining town of Katowice.
New minister Marzena Czarnecka explains: “the ministry must deal with ore, that is, mining, and the question of energy, but energy in terms of mining fuels. The first task is approval aid to coal companies. I hope that this energy transformation will take place right here in Silesia.”
Residents of the city welcomed this news with enthusiasm and hope for changes in the region, like Marian Kedzior: “As a citizen of Katowice and Silesia, I am definitely in favor of it. I remember the time when there was a Ministry of Energy and Mining here and that served the region very well.”
The government also created the Ministries of Policy for Older Persons, Civil Society and Equality. These will address the issue of abortion rights and other pressing issues.
“There will be a commissioner who will deal with equality within the framework of anti-discrimination measures, both in the area of disabled women and men, but also in the area of what is called arc -en-ciel or the LGBTQ+ community” says Katarzyna Kotula, Minister of Equality.
A speech welcomed by the associations, even if they expect concrete actions.
“Symbolically, we are taking action. I give great credit to these ministers and ministries. I believe, like the entire community, that we will monitor their actions. We will also cooperate with them – whatever something that has been completely impossible with the Law and Justice government. Therefore, there is also a huge opportunity to find the solutions that we have talked about so much until now” says Bart Staszewski, LGBT+ activist.
Experts also consider the appointment of these new ministers as a good political initiative and a significant gesture towards voters.
“The problems of these groups motivated many people to go to the polling stations. It was crucial to oppose the activities of the previous government, the government of Donald Tusk wants to make it known, at least I hope so” analyzes Filip Pazderski, of the Institute of Public Affairs.
2024 is also an election year in Poland – administrative and European elections. And it will be another test for the new government and its ability to deliver on its promises to society.
