In pictures: The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin is a prominent landmark in Jerusalem | With pictures

Occupied Jerusalem- Tel Aviv Tribune Net takes you on a photographic tour of the Church of Niama (the Dormition of the Virgin Mary), which is one of the most prominent architectural landmarks on Mount Zion in the occupied city of Jerusalem.

The church is located to the west of the shrine of the Prophet David, and it is the site of the death of Mary, the mother of the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon them both), according to Christian belief.

The current church was built in the early 20th century, on the ruins of a huge Byzantine church that was built in the fourth century and demolished during the Persian invasion.

Over the years of occupation, the church was subjected to several violations, most notably: burning operations or writing racist slogans by settler groups.

Since its inception, the church has been run by Benedictine monks, and their emblem is the rainbow cross, which is a cross with a semicircle above it. This emblem represents a symbol of pain and hope.

In terms of construction, the church is distinguished by its high bell (the place where the bell was placed) that can be ascended by 198 steps, overlooking large parts of the city of Jerusalem.

As for its center, it is a conical dome decorated with mosaics, surrounded by 4 small domes on top of 4 towers.

The interior of the church is also distinguished by its stained and colored German glass windows, murals, and religious icons.

Christians believe that this is the place, or near it, where Jesus Christ ate his last supper and washed the feet of his disciples. They also believe that this is the place where Mary took refuge after his crucifixion, according to their beliefs.

Under the church there is a cave with 12 thick marble columns, and in the middle of it is a statue of the Virgin Mary sleeping on her deathbed.
