The Old City of Jerusalem contains the largest and most important part of Jerusalem’s historical landmarks, symbols and monuments, including Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

The history of the town extends back thousands of years, and its area is about 900 dunams (one thousand dunums), which is 0.71% of the total area of the city, both its western side, occupied in 1948, and its eastern side, occupied in 1967.

The old city is surrounded by a huge wall built by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent – who ruled the city between 1520 and 1566 AD – on the ruins of the old Roman wall. The length of the wall is 3,662 metres, while its height ranges between 11.6 and 12.2 metres.
