In Italy, the Senate approves the controversial agreement with Albania

The government of Giorgia Meloni was impatiently awaiting this decision. The Senate has just given the green light to a controversial migration agreement between Italy and Albania.

The text plans to send migrants rescued at sea by the Italian coast guard to two reception centers opened in the northwest of Albania and managed by Italy.

The text encounters some opposition in Albania where MPs and NGOs had appealed to the Constitutional Court, without success.

But this agreement has a certain importance in Italy, for the far-right Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who was elected with the promise of reducing illegal immigration.

In 2023, the number of illegal migrants will double in the country, compared to the previous year.
