Girogia Meloni, proposes a constitutional law so that the Prime Minister will now be elected by the citizens in the next elections. If this reform is promulgated, it will allow the government to establish the Third Republic.
The president of the Italian council, Girorgia Meloni, defends a constitutional reform, which aims to elect the next prime minister by direct universal suffrage. The objective of this bill is to allow Italians to choose who to be governed by, which will guarantee better political stability. Coalitions remain fragile; in 75 years of history, Italians have experienced sixty-eight different governments, the duration of which does not reach 18 months.
In Italy, the Prime Minister is officially appointed by the President of the Republic, but in fact, he depends on the majority of the Italian Parliament, which operates in a bicameral system.
The constitutional reform must now be debated by both houses of Parliament in 2024. If the text is not voted by a two-thirds majority by parliamentarians, it will be submitted to the Italians in a referendum which could take place in 2025 .
A change of political regime was also proposed by Matteo Renzi, who had to leave power in 2016, after the massive rejection by referendum of his proposal to change the constitution.
If this constitutional reform is adopted, it would pave the way for the establishment of a third Republic.
