In Georgia, a Stalin icon vandalized in a church sparks controversy

An angry crowd gathered in front of a house in the Georgian capital. A woman reportedly lives here, accused of having vandalized, in a church, an icon on which a character with the likeness of Stalin is represented.

This image, broadcast on social networks, caused a scandal in the former Soviet republic. For some, this icon would promote the former dictator.

Faced with the outcry caused by this affair, Patriarch Elijah II of Georgia asked that it be removed from the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Tbilisi.

Born in 1878 in Gori, Georgia, Joseph Stalin led the USSR from the late 1920s until his death in Moscow in 1953. He remains a very controversial figure in his country, where the population is predominantly pro-European. and the pro-Russian government.
