Three quarters of journalists killed worldwide in 2023 died in the Gaza Strip.
The Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ, has released its annual report.
Of 99 media workers killed worldwide in 2023, more than three-quarters died in Gaza.
CPJ estimates that between October and December 2023, in three months of Israel’s offensive, the number of journalists killed exceeds that of any country in an entire year.
The committee is also investigating the circumstances of the death of around ten Palestinian journalists, out of the 72 killed. In some cases they could have been deliberately targeted by the Israeli army.
The toll for the year 2023 is the highest since 2015, with an increase of approximately 44% compared to the previous year. Apart from this conflict, 22 journalists and media workers have been killed in 18 countries.
The difficulty of reporting in Mexico, Somalia and the Philippines
CPJ data shows targeting of journalists remains constant in Mexico, Somalia and the Philippinescountries that have already been deadly for the profession in recent years.
The number of journalists killed in Mexico fell from 13 in 2022 to two in 2023, a positive development, but they continue to suffer attacks, including harassment, threats and kidnappings.
