In Budapest, Robert Fico and Viktor Orbán want to form a united front against the EU

The Hungarian Prime Minister received his Slovenian counterpart in Budapest this Wednesday. The two leaders want the European Union to reverse its migration policy and its aid to Ukraine.

It is a visit that the Hungarian Prime Minister had been waiting for for a long time: that of his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico, who returned to power last September, thanks to whom he could finally emerge from his isolation in Europe.

Just like Viktor Orbán, the new Slovak head of government supports a very conservative vision of the European Union… particularly on LGBT+ rights or migration policy. The two men intend to make this known at the next European summit by carrying a common message.

“Sovereignty is important for both states. Neither Hungary nor Slovakia wants the EU to turn into a superstate. And we do not want illegal immigration to be legitimized” said Viktor Orbán.

The Slovak Prime Minister also opposes any new European aid to Kyiv. Robert Fico said during the press conference that Slovakia was “very grateful to Hungary for the security of Slovak airspace provided by its defense forces. Previous governments gave all weapons to the Ukrainians, leaving us completely defenseless.”

Viktor Orbán claimed that Slovak and Hungarian national interests were 99 percent the same. Despite the fact that Robert Fico voted in favor of financial support for Ukraine and its EU membership at the EU summit in December. This shows that Hungary Prime Minister once again overestimates friendship, just like he did with Italy.
