In Bosnia, the Drina River is once again blocked by almost 10,000 cubic meters of waste. Environmental activists are calling for barriers to be put in place upstream.
Like every year at this time, thehe Drina River in eastern Bosnia is once again blocked by a mass of waste that mixes with toxic materials from illegal dumps behind the hydroelectric power station in the city of Visegrad. A situation which reaches its peak at the beginning of January.
“In my opinion, all municipalities upstream of Visegrad should install garbage barriers like this and establish their own waste collection teams in order to speed up waste removal, make it more efficient and also d “prevent waste from sinking to the bottom of the river. Because if the waste remains in the water for a year, most of it risks sinking” explains Dejan Furtula, environmental activist.
According to recent studies, approximately 10,000 cubic meters of waste are discharged from this section of the river every year. With its emerald waters and green valleys, the Drina is a popular tourist destination, and environmental activists say it will take a long time to resolve its pollution problems.
