Across France, hundreds of thousands of people reiterated their opposition to the immigration law this weekend. The demonstrators numbered 75,000 across the country according to the Ministry of the Interior, 150,000 according to the CGT.
Adopted in December by parliament, the text is described by some of its detractors as being the most repressive in the last 40 years in terms of immigration.
In particular, it establishes annual quotas for immigrants, the revocation of their right of residence in the event of violation of the law or republican principles, as well as a reduction in social assistance granted to foreigners.
More than 200 figures opposed to the law had called for rallies this weekend. The demonstrators who responded to the call asked the President of the Republic not to promulgate the law.
Emmanuel Macron supported the text during its complicated journey through parliament. Surprisingly, the head of state has since declared that certain articles appear not to respect the Constitution.
