The new volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland began shortly after the evacuation of the nearby town of Grindavik.

The small port town of 4,000 inhabitants had already been hit by lava during a previous eruption.

Lava rose to the surface near Sundhnúksgígar, north of Grindavik.

The volcano had calmed three weeks ago and the Icelandic Meteorological Institute had reported a resumption of seismic activity.

The plumes of this new eruption, the fifth since last December, rise to at least 50 meters above the ground.
