The volcano is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in the southwest of the country.
A new volcanic eruption is hitting Iceland…The third in less than three months. It took place in the southwest of the country, where authorities declared a state of emergency.
The lava flow, which covered certain roads, caused other material damage. Like the explosion of hot water pipes, which created shortages for some residents in the area where the eruption took place.
28,000 people live in this region, which is one of the most populated in the country.
“There were a few eruptions in the sea off the peninsula, but nothing happened on land for almost 800 years. And during that time, the rest of Iceland had probably 150 or 200 eruptions. So people naturally thought that this area was relatively safe and started building“, explains Dave McGarvie, volcanologist.
After being spared for several centuries, Iceland, considered the most volcanic area in Europe, has experienced six eruptions in the last three years.
