A cruise ship was connected to electricity for the first time at Miðbakki in Reykjavik Harbor yesterday during an official ceremony.

The electrification of the port should help reduce air and noise pollution caused by ships.
“For the first time, the engine room is silent, and it’s a bit strange for us” said Jan Robin Pettersen, chief engineer of the Fridtjof Nansen cruise ship.
Now ships will no longer need to run their diesel engines to operate the electrical systems on board. Typically, between 7,000 and 8,000 liters of fuel are consumed in 12 hours at the dock.
