Thousands of people queued in Budapest during a food distribution. More and more Hungarians including retirees need food aid. Inflation is plunging some people into precariousness.
This December 24, in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, thousands of people queued in the cold for a distribution of food offered for Christmas by the Food for Life Krichna association, in the Nepliget district.
As early as 4 a.m., some beneficiaries were already in line. All the food baskets had been exhausted by 10 a.m.
The association’s spokesperson, Csilla Szilaj Péterné, declared:
“Every year, more and more families and retirees join the queue. We also see parents with children. There are many single-parent families. Mothers raise one or two children alone, and one A basket of food can be of great help to them.
According to the members of the association, there are more and more middle-class families and retired people. Inflation, the energy crisis and the housing crisis are plunging many Hungarians into precariousness. Food for Life distributed more than 3,000 meals in the three days leading up to Christmas.
