Plastic waste sorting was set up to meet a European environmental objective. But this system is experiencing operational difficulties and must be completely reorganized.
The entire Hungarian recycling system needs to be reorganized, following problems with overflowing bins and long queues.
A large number of disappointed consumers are due to be reimbursed 0.13 euro cents for each empty beverage container returned.
In fact, 3.5 million bottles are thrown into the machines every day, which is far more than the intended capacity.
While society MOHU MOL admitted the problem, users like Fruzsina resigned themselves:
“Once we came with a lot of bags, but the machines weren’t working. Then we went to another one, but it didn’t work either. Finally, we took the waste home.”
Other issues include the machine not recognizing bottles or the return application not being scanned.
Vendors have to empty the machines regularly, the manufacturer takes care of breakdowns, and MOHU is held responsible for the lack of recycling points throughout the country.
Instead of solving these problems, no one is taking responsibility. Hungary has only one year left to reach the European target of 6.5 million bottles per day.
