Located in the Jewish Quarter of the Dutch capital, the Holocaust Museum will open in Amsterdam in a few days. 102,000 Jews were killed in the Netherlands during World War II.
Before World War II, the Netherlands was home to approximately 140,000 Jews. 102,000 of them were killed during the Holocaust.
More than 2,000 objects are on display here, most of which have never been shown to the public. Like letters, photos of the victims, but also striped uniforms from Auschwitz.
“The reason they ended up in this killing machine is because they were Jewish. At a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise, it is important to give this ultimate expression of hatred towards Jews a place in collective memory, which is of capital importance to us“, explains Emile Schrijver, director of the National Holocaust Museum.
Faced with the increase in anti-Semitic incidents, which doubled in 2023, according to official figures, the city of Amsterdam has allocated nearly one million euros to secure the museum.
The establishment will be officially inaugurated on Sunday March 10, in the presence of the King of the Netherlands.
