The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945. Euronews went to meet the second generation of survivors, who keep the memory alive victims of the holocaust.
Every year January 27 is dedicated to the memory of genocides and the prevention of crimes against humanity. This year, the date marks the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp by Soviet troops.
Euronews went to meet the daughter of a survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp; This second generation of survivors perpetuates the memory of their parents, like Katarzyna Warman, daughter of a survivor:
“6 million Jews were wiped out and I don’t want them to just be, to leave a blank space. I would like to fill that space with memories. It started with the fact that they didn’t have the “the right to go to parks, that they were forbidden to work, to marry people of another religion. It started with small steps and those steps led to the Holocaust.”
Nearly 80 years later, people continue to cherish the memory of those who survived to remind us that there is no more hatred. Magdalena Chodownik
