Port Sudan – With intermittent breath, the young man, Muhammad Omar, wipes the sweat from his forehead with a cloth, and says that he did not imagine that the temperatures are so cruel, and complain about the high temperatures that made his mission difficult as a carrier on a vehicle he dragged with his hands, which forced him to resort to the shadow asking for a light breeze every time.
Omar explains – a twenty displaced person – that he had to reduce the number of hours of his work during the day due to the high temperatures, and added, “I did not imagine that the weather in Port Sudan is so cruel, now I have to work either early or after noon to avoid direct and long exposure to the sun.”
The city of Port Sudan suffers during these days and throughout the past week from volatile weather, as temperatures witnessed an unprecedented rise and 47 degrees Celsius with dusty winds, which exacerbated the suffering of people, and united their movement during the daylight hours.
Two days ago, the Port Sudan Airport administration canceled flights, and announced “the suspension of flights temporarily due to bad weather, in order to preserve the safety of passengers and aircraft,” according to a brief statement about the airport administration before the flights resumed later.
Extremist phenomena
The results of a study conducted by a number of African climate scientists at the University of Imperial College, headquartered in Khartoum, last year, showed that Sudan may be exposed to extremist climate phenomena every 3 years.
The head of the early warning unit at the Sudanese General Meteorological Authority, Dr. Abu Al -Qasim Musa Ibrahim, explains that the causes of the volatile weather in the city of Port Sudan is due to the tropical separation movement, which is the separation line between the dry northern winds and the southern southern winds.
The expert attributes the reason that “the pressure systems in the north and the pressure systems in the south put the city of Port Sudan in the event of a swing between the two air blocs, the wet south of the tropical separator that carries the southwest winds, and the dry mass coming from the north and the northern winds.”
He added that the conflict between these blocs led to the movement of unusual winds at this time and in this desert environment, which produced the intense dust in the region.
Ibrahim confirmed that the Sudanese meteorology issued two days ago and a very dangerous warning in this regard. He said, “This time, the tropical break has reached the north of the city of Port Sudan, which is not customary for the region, and this comes in conjunction with the severe heat wave.”
In his interview with Al -Jazeera Net, he explains that “severe heat waves are one of the manifestations of climatic changes in the world, and that Port Sudan is not an exception.” He added that Sudan has become witnessing every year one of the extremist phenomena, whether it is a severity or severe free waves, or severe cold waves. “
He also expected that the fluctuations will be the dominant feature of the expected weather during the coming period in the city of Port Sudan, explaining that “the soil of some days may be calmed down and then returns at other times, as the tropical separation is still south of the city, and it is also expected that the rains of the south of the Red Sea state, which may create differences in pressure that provoke dust and dust, but it is not expected to increase temperatures during the coming period.”
He says that one of the phenomena of climate change is rain in the Red Sea state in the past months, as the rain was winter in the months of October, November, and December, but as a result of climate changes there became rain in June and September, a new phenomenon, he said.
Plans and willingness
The volatile weather has prompted the Traffic Department in the Red Sea State to issue a notification of vehicle drivers and road users about the influence of the state with dust, dust and sandstorms, which may lead to low visibility, and appealed to road users to cautiously, reduce speed and use front lighting in order to preserve lives.
In a statement to Al -Jazeera Net, the Director of the Health Emergency and Epidemiology Department at the Sudanese Ministry of Health, Laila Hamad Al -Nile, confirmed the arrival of 3 cases suffering from sunstroke that have been officially reported, so far, and have been addressed, with the possibility of cases that the hospital has not arrived.
The doctor emphasized that there are a number of risks resulting from the volatility of the weather, including high temperatures, and stirring dust and dust that may affect respiratory patients, while recommending to reduce movement during the volatile weather periods.
She explained that the high temperatures are not only in the city of Port Sudan, Red Sea, but also in the northern states and the Nile River annually led to cases of sunstroke and heat stress.
She said that the Sudanese Ministry of Health is preparing early by training medical teams and providing drugs and heat lowering, and appointing places to treat cases that are exposed to sunstroke and heat stress, noting that it started in Port Sudan two weeks ago to implement the plan with a weekly evaluation.
She pointed to the preparation of ambulances to transport any situation affected by the high temperatures in the states concerned, training and qualifying the rapid response teams, and providing ways for rapid reporting of cases.
